EPL : De Bruyne’s brilliant freekick sees Man City go top without Haaland

Erling Haaland wasn’t available for Manchester City as they visited the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City on Saturday lunchtime, but they have other star players and Kevin de Bruyne stepped up.

Specifically, he stepped up to take a freekick four minutes into the second half, that powerfully got up and over the wall, with the ball clipping the post and nestling in the back of the net.

That proved to be the only goal of the game as Manchester City struggled to kill the Foxes off.

Leicester mounted a late fightback, creating a few half chances and actually coming closest when Ruben Dias and John Stones produced a dangerous ricochet that almost snuck in. But, Ederson was able to maintain a clean sheet and Manchester City go top for now.

Julian Alvarez had a quiet game as he replaced Haaland up front, with the Sky Blues needing a moment of brilliant from the Belgian instead.

De Bruyne is one of the best long-range shooters in Premier League history. Of the players who have scored more than 50 goals from outside the box in the history of the competition, only David Beckham (55 percent of goals) and Christian Eriksen (44 percent) have scored more frequently from distance than De Bruyne (42 percent).
