UITH national nurses, midwives association condemns assault on doctor

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH chapter, on Thursday, condemned last Tuesday’s assault on one of its members and a doctor by three bereaved relatives of a patient Alhaji Saliu, who died at the hospital as a result of blood cancer.

The association in statement in Ilorin signed by its Chairman, Kazeem Afolabi Ayinla, warned that the union would no longer tolerate such violent attacks on any of its members.

The body said such barbaric acts on any of its members and other health workers in the hospital “must stop.”

Ayinla said while, the leadership of the association sympathises with the relatives of the deceased, it was wrong for anyone to act in such manner.

He urged the management of the facility to strengthen its security network to forestall future occurrence.

Recall that three family members of one Alhaji Salihu, a butcher who died at the hospital on Tuesday reportedly beat up a medical doctor and attacked a nurse on duty in the accident and emergency (A&E) wing of the UITH following what they described as nonchalant attitude of medical staff leading to the death of their relative.

During the attack, it was gathered that heavy equipment were reportedly thrown at a nurse on duty twice but for her alertness, she dodged them on the two occasions.

While the equipment reportedly got damaged, the nurse reportedly ran for her dear life.

The leadership of NANNM UITH Chapter had also extracted a written apology from the family of the deceased’s relative over the incident.
