From Scholastica Onyeka, Makurdi

The Parish Priest of St.Joseph Catholic Church, Jootar, in Ukum Local Government Area, (LGA) of Benue state, Rev Fr Faustinus Gundu, has allegedly been struck dead by lightning.

As at the time of writing this report, unconfirmed sources has two version of how he died.

While one version claimed that he was struck by lightening and thunder during a rain storm, another version said he slumped and died before help could come.

Our correspondent, however, gathered that late Fr Gundu had rushed out to pick a towel outside his residence when the rain began. It was gathered that while he was outside, he slipped and fell hitting his head on a hard surface.

It was also gathered that the priest ,who was alone at the time of the incident, had no one to help him and as a result, he laid out there while the rain lasted.

The unconfirmed sources said by the time people saw him on the ground, he had died.

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, but could not confirm whether he slumped and died or died by thunder.

She said, “I received the report but they alleged it thunder that killed him. It is until we investigate before that would be concluded,” Anene said.
