Lassa Fever Outbreak: Enugu NMA tasks Residents on precautionary Measures

 


The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State Chapter, has advised Enugu residents to prepare for a possible fresh Lassa fever outbreak in the State. 


The medical body's outburst followed a recent report of Lassa fever outbreak in the country. 


In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Amobi Omoha (MOBILITY), Chairman, NMA Enugu State infectious Disease committee and Dr. Bartholomew Nwankwo, Secretary, NMA Enugu State Infectious Disease committee, the medical association expressed concerns over the outbreak, while outlining preventive and precautionary measures.

"⚠️ 🛑 *_LASSA FEVER ALERT_*🛑 ⚠️


"Seasonal greetings to Elders, Senior colleagues and Colleagues.


"Following suspected *out break of viral haemorrhagic fever* in the country and the need to institute strict infection, prevention and control at all times in our environment.

 

"The *Infectious Disease Committee of NMA Enugu State* writes to alert us that the *peak season for transmission of Lassa fever is upon us*. We bring your attention to a matter of utmost importance – *the prevention of Lassa Fever.*


"Lassa Fever is a severe viral illness that can lead to serious health complications. In light of this, it is crucial for each of us to take proactive measures to protect ourselves and our loved ones.


"The signs and symptoms of Lassa Fever is usually gradual, these may his include:


 ▫️Fever 

▪️General weakness

 ▫️Malaise

 ▪️Meadache 

▫️Sore throat 

▫️Muscle pain

▪️Chest pain

▫️ Nausea

▪️Vomiting

▫️Diarrhoea

 ▪️Cough

 ▫️Abdominal pain may follow.

▪️Abnormal Bleeding from different body orifices


🔺 *High index of suspicion is required!*


Here are some *key precautions* we can take:


✅1.*Maintain Personal Hygiene:**

   - Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.

   - Use alcohol based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not readily available.


✅2.*Practice Safe Food Handling:**

   - Cook food thoroughly, especially meat.

   - Avoid consuming raw or undercooked food.


✅3.*Keep Your Environment Clean:**

   - Dispose waste properly to prevent attracting rodents.

   - Seal all food items in rodent-proof containers.


✅4.*Avoid Contact with Rodents:**

   - Eliminate potential hiding places for rodents in and around your home.

   - If you spot signs of rodents, take immediate action to address the issue.


✅5.*Be Cautious in Healthcare Settings:**

   - Health workers should adhere to strict infection prevention and control (IPC) measures.


✅6.*Seek Medical Attention Promptly:**

   - If you experience symptoms such as fever, headache, and muscle aches, seek medical attention immediately. *The physician needs to be healthy to save others.*


✅7.*Educate Others:**

   - Share this information with family, friends, and neighbors to raise awareness.
