One Year in Office: Mbah: A Profile in Extraordinary Courageous Leadership Exemplification

By Solomon Gwiyi

In the past one year of his stewardship as  Governor of our dear State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, known for his visionary, audacious, courageous and exemplary lead

ership style, has without an iota of doubts, demonstrated beyond reasons that here is a leader with extraordinary leadership qualities, who has done for Ndi Enugu State, what most pessimists never believed was practicable, especially, within one year of his ascension to power as the State's helmsman.

The governor's audacious restoration of water in the state metropolis, after 22 years of biting and burning water scarcity in the state municipality, has however, placed him as an indescribable and incredible public individual who came, saw and conquered within a given period of 180 days.

You will recall that the Governor prior to his assumption of office as chief Executive Officer of the state in 2023, gave a definable timeframe of 180 days, within which he would make drinkable and treated water available for the indigenes and residents of the state.

The timeframe was initially dashed away with the wave of the hand by the opposition (alongside their accomplices), who believed the governor's avowal would end up like one of those political chitchats, but here comes a doer of his own words, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who did not just deliver on this set-out-goal within the stipulated period of time but ensured that water galleries were also strategically constructed and stationed in Major parts of the state metropolis Popularly known as 'densely' populated.

The above courageous exploit, was also, however demonstrated in the Security sector when the governor, shortly after his assumption of office, boldly and lionheartedly banned the popular sit-at-home directive of the indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in the state, which for many years, had paralyzed the economic activities of not just the state, but the entire southeast region of the country.

The move which has since its implementation, bolstered and boasted the economic activities of the state, has however, led to the revival of both social and economic activities - in and around major markets, cities, villages and other public places in  the state.

This reader will recall that On the 9th of August, 2021, the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had pronounced the sit-at-home order across the Southeast region, thereby rendering the first working day of the week (Monday) economically useless, as Mondays became synonymous with sit at home in the southeast.

However, In like admirable leadership manner, the governor had, in the dieing days of 2023,  in order to enhance accessibility and connectivity, brazenly embarked on aggressive and massive construction of roads across Enugu state. He had awarded and commenced construction of over 71 road projects across the state simultaneously. The roads included the Dualization of the 40km's Owo- Ubahu- Amankanu- Neke- Ikem to serve as a gateway from East to the Northern parts of Nigeria.

This nervy and venturesome decision was flagged off, in pursuance to his campaign promise, to within eight years of his tenancy at the Lion building, Government house, construct over 10, 000 kilometers of roads across the state.

Today, the state metropolis bears adequate testimony of the governor's ingenuity and commitment to ensure speedy realization of the above objective, while transforming the state, through massive construction of roads across the state.

Evidently, some of the roads which the governor has already completed within his one year in office include New Haven/Phone Village, Trans-Ekulu road, Damidja Trans-Ekulu road, New Haven road, college road, Abakpa; Golf Estate road, GRA; Premier Layout road, Odudukoko Street, Garki; among others.

On the other hand, Concerned and worried about the declining quality of education across primary and secondary schools in Enugu state, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, known for his obsession with innovation and modernity, has commenced construction of 260 smart schools across the state to provide modern basic education to Enugu children from creche to junior secondary school.

The Smart Schools, if completed, will integrate modern technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance the quality of education and equip the youth with relevant skills needed to make them employable, in line with global best practices.

There is, also, massive construction of about 260 primary healthcare centres across the 260 political wards of the state. The health centres, Popularly known as Type-2 primary healthcare centres, if completed, would make it easy for the residents and indigenes of Enugu State, to have access to quality and affordable health services, both at the municipal area and at the grassroots.

Over and above, the new administration, had during its presentation of manifesto, shortly after Governor Mbah was unveiled as candidate of the peoples Democratic Party (PDP), prior to the 2023 general elections, rolled out a master plan to establish and construct a New Enugu City across Nkanu West, Nkanu East and Enugu East.

This daring initiative of Governor Mbah, which spans across sprawling 10,000-hectares of land, if completed, would be equipped with modern infrastructures, technologies and other fittings, capable of helping the new administration to decongest Enugu municipality from over crowding.

The Governor within his one year in office initiated and has signed the Enugu State Electricity Law, which domesticates the Electricity Act 2023, giving the state regulatory power to establish an Enugu State Electricity Market to attract investors to expand power generation and distribution across the state.

Within a short time, his administration has repositioned the state in its relationship with development partners, like the World Bank, AFD (the French Development Agency), and opened the door to new funding for projects.

The Mbah government has embarked on a full automation of all the key functions of the state government and has addressed the issue of fiscal energy and environmental cleanliness. There is a robust plan for a new Enugu City to allow for decongestion and rapid growth while providing real estate investment opportunities, as well as attracting investors from the Diaspora.

Governor Mbah has initiated to take over the construction of the international wing of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, with a plan to put in place facilities that would make it a cargo hub in the South East and South South. Also, he has undertaken to resume work at the abandoned International Conference Centre, Enugu, with the aim of making Enugu, on completion of the project, conference destination in Africa, among others. The Afreximbank President, during working visit to the Enugu State Government House earlier in January, endorsed Mbah’s prioritise and investment drive, assuring of the bank’s commitment to help the administration to fund and realise these key investment enablers.

Enugu State, under Mbah, has joined the World Bank Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) to improve livestock productivity, resilience and commercialisation of selected value chains. Also, the state has joined the Nigeria for Women project by paying for counterpart funding for the project, which is a strategic long-term partnership between the Federal Government and World Bank to support the government’s goal of ensuring gender equality. This intervention will ensure the inflow of at least $10 million to Enugu State over the planned period for the execution of projects to boost the economic capacity of women in the state.
