JUST IN: Senator Osita Ngwu Woos Ireland for Scholarship Schemes for the People of Enugu West


 

In a bid to uplift more of his constituents in the area of education, Distinguished Senator Osita Ngwu, the Minority Whip of the Senate has taken steps to secure fully funded scholarships for the people of Enugu West Senatorial District that he represents in the 10th Senate.


Enugupress.ng reports that the Senator, had two days ago, on 20th of August 2024, paid a courtesy visit to the Ambassador of Republic of Ireland, His Excellency Peter Ryan in the Irish Embassy in Abuja.


The visit, among other objectives afforded the Senator the opportunity to advance his educational funding program for the good people of Enugu West Senatorial District.


The Ambassador, who was on hand to receive the Senator expressed delight over the visit of the Senator to the Embassy. 


The Senator, in his opening remarks, acknowledged that Ireland has a sound educational system that has attracted a lot of Nigerian post graduate students. 


He further told the Ambassador that he was aware of some Irish scholarship schemes for foreign students and requested that the gesture be extended to the good people of Enugu West Senatorial District.


In his response, the Ambassador expressed admiration for Nigerians, referring to how Nigerians in diaspora work hard to break jinx in some rare areas of human endeavors. 


He drew attention to one Ms. Yemi Adenuga, a Nigerian born Irish based woman, who won election to become a member of Parliament in Ireland. 


The Ambassador also made mention of a group of Nigerian Igbos who were lifted out of Nigeria to Ireland during the Nigerian civil war and so far have progressed and built a community of successful business men that have investment in various parts of Europe and America, but sadly, have no investment in Nigeria.


He disclosed that the group were also involved in extensive humanitarian services across the globe, but none in Nigeria. He, therefore urge the Senator to reach out to them. 


The Irish Ambassador offered to assist whenever the Senator is willing to reach out to Nigerians in Ireland and the Igbo group too. 


The Ambassador further disclosed that the rate of Nigerians coming into Ireland for Studies annually is 800 to 1000 persons yearly. He stated that Ireland with a population of about 6,000,000 residents, is blessed with enormous resources.


Affirming that when Ireland joined the European Union in 1973, it was the poorest in that Union, the Ambassador noted that within a space of 10 years, the country picked up tremendously.


He assured the Senate Minority Whip that he would work with him to empower more Enugu West students with educational materials and opportunities.
