UNN Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences: Onyishi bows out as Dean, List achievements

...Receives commendation from management, staff 

Prof. Ikechukwu Onyishi has completed his tenure as the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) amidst cheers and commendations by the University authority and faculty staff.

In a ceremony organized by the faculty on Wednesday to mark the end of Onyishi's tenure, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwo, while commissioning some of the projects executed by Onyishi in the faculty commended and described him as a prudent manager of human and material resources. 

"I commend Onyishi for the judicious use of the Faculty resources by using them to improve the standard of the Faculty, I urge the incoming Dean to consolidate on it.

"The projects you executed will go a long way in enhancing research, teaching, and learning in the faculty," he said.
The Acting VC assured that the university authority would continue to assist the faculty to enhance the faculty’s infrastructure and academic rigour.

Speaking, Prof Onyishi expressed appreciation to the faculty staff, students, alumni, and the university management for their support in their various capacities that made what he termed as his "modest achievements" possible, stressing that he would forever remain indebted to them.

He said that what propelled and sustained his desire to work harder was that he wanted to leave the faculty better than he met it.

"I remain grateful to the Faculty Board for their good directives, encouragements, support, and advice that made it possible for me to record these achievements," he said.
He listed his achievements in the faculty as follows: Roofing of faculty building cap and total repair of complex roof blown off by wind, Expansion of e-library from 200 to 400 carrying capacity with new addition of 200 touch screen laptops and seats, Installation of patented server in the e-library for mounting CA’s and exams, Deploying of biometric for class attendance and exam/test administration from 2nd to 5th year.

Provision of 36 automatic hybrid CCTV cameras to secure the faculty assets, Provision of 34.5kva solar for uninterrupted power in the e-library, Procurement of HP server for synchronizing all result collation, Through the donation of 12kwh solar equipment worth tens of millions by pharmacy class of 2003, uninterrupted power has been provided for our faculty lecture theatre, Construction of solar farm, Indexing of the faculty journal, Ajopred in Doi and scimago (in process).

Others are: Securing approval for our e-library to be used as a national and international CBT centre, Procurement of 3 fireproof shelves for keeping of faculty official documents, Refurbishing of seats in the faculty, Provision of data in space for the biometric machine, Actualization of the budgeting of our Doping Lab building by the FGN in 2024 budget. Repair of sewage and toilets of Bello hostel for our students, Remodelling and reroofing of J-block building of faculty of pharmaceutical sciences, among others.

In a remark, Dr. John Dike N. Ogbonna, Associate Dean of the Faculty said that working with Prof. Onyishi has exposed him to his quality leadership skills.

"Working with Onyishi as his second in command from 2022 to 2024 opened my eyes to the quality leadership he possessed as a person that I never knew.  

"I realized that he is a strong-willed person one who is free to interact with everybody (staff and students) not minding the class. 

"His philanthropic gestures are topnotch, he is taciturn and doesn't believe in tit for tat instead as a true Christian he let God judge each base on his actions," he said.

Also, Prof. Anthony Attama, former Dean of the Faculty commended Onyishi for the numerous achievements as well as carrying everybody along which he said contributed immensely to the success of his tenure.
Venerable Sampson Ezea, Head of Pharmacognosy & Environmental Medicine, expressed appreciation to God for using Onyishi as an instrument to transform the Faculty to an enviable standard.

The HOD expressed optimism that the incoming Dean, Prof. Chukwuemeka S. Nworu will improve on the achievements of Onyishi as well as maintain the existing infrastructure in the faculty.
