The President of the Senior Staff Club of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Prof. Innocent Nnamchi has said that the incoming substantive Vice chancellor of the institution must have the capacity and vision to make UNN one of the best universities in the world.
Recall that the Governing Council of UNN is expected to appoint a substantive VC within five months that would take over from Prof. Oguejiofo Ujam who is the present acting VC of the university.
Nnamchi, who was recently elected as the UNN Senior Staff Club's president, said this in Nsukka on Saturday while interacting with newsmen on his plans and programmes for the club.
He said that UNN as the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria is yawning for a substantive VC who would put service first and have a goal that will reposition the university as one of the best globally as well with high-quality research output and academic excellence.
"Substantive UNN VC should have a goal to push for the best so that academics would be able to publish their work in top world journals that would not only bring it financial rewards but also make the university a household name globally.
"We want a VC who has the capacity, the training and one who will go all out through his or her managerial ability to reposition the university as one of the best in Nigeria, Africa and globally," he said.
Nnamchi, a Professor of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology, and a lecturer at the Department of Microbiology, UNN, said that he has the vision to leave the club better than he met it by carrying all members along so as to take the club to a greater height.
"I have been a member of this club for close to 20 years, and have served in different capacities like Social Secretary, Secretary, and Vice President, which satisfy the culture of the club that anybody who wants to buy for the president must have served in a different capacity.
"I will do everything within my capacity that's my administration would leave this club better than I met it," he said.
The club president said further that his administration has initiated plans to expand sports activities in the club by adding basketball, badminton, and volleyball courts which according to him will make the club more enabling for members.
"I will also make the children's game center in the club a top-notch so that club members will comfortably visit and relax to play games with their families members," he said.
He disclosed also that his administration will from time to time invite dignitaries who will come to talk to members on the state of the nation so that members will also make their inputs.
"I will also invite medical experts from time to time to give members education on wellness and how to maintain a healthy life," he said.
According to the president, the club is a meeting point for senior staff from departments, faculties and centres in the university, which occasionally VC and other top management officers use to visit the club to unwind.
"Yes, this club is part of the decision-making body in UNN, although on adversary capacity," he said.
